The Gilberd School

At the Gilberd School we believe that all students should access a wide range of high quality practical music making, regardless of their experience and based around the Model Music Curriculum. Students develop their skills in the three disciplines of performing, composing, and listening and analysis of a range of historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions.

We are extremely proud of the large numbers of uptake of instrumental lessons and the breadth this covers. We have around 250 students a year learning an instrument including violin, viola, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, piano, guitar, vocals and drum kit. Students can participate in a wide range of ensembles including three choirs, orchestra, ensembles for guitars, flutes, clarinets, brass, woodwind and strings and ad hoc student led groups.

We currently have around 120 student across year 10 and 11 studying AQA GCSE Music and all of these are offered a 15 minute lesson funded by the school to ensure access for students of all abilities. Our KS3 curriculum is broad and balanced ensuring all students are prepared for the rigour of GCSE studies.
